Colposcopy & Abnormal Pap Smears |
|
| |
We now know that the cause of cervical cancer is related to the Human
Papilloma Virus (HPV). We can test for this with the pap smear. Young
women age 9-26 can receive the Gardasil Vaccine and be vaccinated
against the virus. They can receive the vaccine even if they have
already been exposed. It may help to fight the infection.
Gardasil
Pap smears that are abnormal need to be followed with colposcopy.
Colposcopy is a way to look closely at the cervix through a high-powered
microscope. The cervix is scrutinized and biopsies are taken of any
suspicious areas. The follow-up plan is based on these biopsy results.
Most women will eventually clear the virus from their body. Until then
it is important to have good follow up of the abnormal pap smear.
The physicians at Mountain View are experienced colposcopists and will
follow up on any abnormal findings according to the best evidence based
protocols. The protocols followed are recommended by the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
