The vagina is an organ that is often traumatized by
delivery of a baby. The walls lose their support and droop. The drooping
can cause the bladder or the rectum to hang out of the vagina and
interfere with walking, exercise, sex, or bowel and/or bladder function.
The uterus can also droop down and hang out of the vagina. This is a
frightening experience for women, and they often do not understand what
is happening. Essentially, this would be a hernia of the vagina, which may be treated with a synthetic mesh material.
There are surgical procedures that can repair this damage and restore
comfort to the individual woman. Many of these problems can be addressed
through the vagina, thus avoiding abdominal incisions and the pain and
longer recovery abdominal surgery entails. New mesh materials are
available to fix these damaged areas. Mountain View's surgeons pride
themselves in staying abreast of the latest techniques and procedures in
vaginal repair.
Uterine preservation can be performed with these mesh materials and thus
the dropped bladder or uterus or rectum can be fixed without removing
the uterus itself. This makes it safer and faster to recover from the
surgery. The ovaries can also be removed vaginally and again leave no
scars. The ovaries can also be removed this way if they fit the correct
criteria.
Vaginal surgery is a great option for the appropriate patient and will
get her back on her feet in a relatively short period of time.
